The locale for the Fabri-Licious Retreat is Algonquin College. The College provides a small and intimate environment for an event such as this. The campus is enclosed within a space about the size of one city block. Buildings we would be using are 4-7 minutes apart and no point on campus is more than about 8-10 minutes walking distance from any other. The campus is wheelchair accessible and barrier free suites are available in the residence. The entire campus and residence is smoke-free.

The campus is 10 minutes from Fallowfield train station and about 20 minutes from Ottawa International Airport.

The Residence is organized into suites with two bedrooms (one double bed, colour television and telephone in each) per suite; shared kitchenette with fridge, sink, microwave, table and 2 chairs, etc. and a 3 piece bath. You get all this for only $79.99 plus taxes per two bedroom suite. This includes a continental breakfast!  Maid service, shampoo, linens, etc. are provided as they would be in a hotel.

The rate for a single double occupancy suite is:

$79.99 per two bedroom suite per night ($90.34 with taxes)
Check in time is 3:00 p.m.
Check out time is 11:00 a.m.

You must reserve your own room using the Accommodation Reservation Form, which should be sent DIRECTLY TO ALGONQUIN COLLEGE.

There are lounges for relaxing with television, sofas, tables and chairs throughout the residence. There are soft drink and candy machines near all lounge areas and there is also a fully equipped laundry area. Just outside the residence there are two courtyards, lovely green spaces with seating and BBQs for guest use.

The Retreat Registration desk will be in the Hospitality Suite (Parliament 2, Second Floor of the Residence.)

There is a major bank within walking distance of the campus and there are ATM machines on campus. There is lots of shopping nearby. Shops such as Jacob, Tommy Hilfiger, Hallmark, Loblaws, and Timothy’s Coffee are within easy walking distance and Lee Valley, Fabricland, Chapters, and Michaels stores are a 5-10 minute car drive away.

There is excellent bus service to downtown Ottawa (20 minutes), Parliament Hill, and the historic Byward Market area.

Algonquin College is located on Woodroffe Avenue near the corner of Woodroffe Avenue and Baseline Road. Enter the Algonquin campus via either Navaho Drive (closest to Baseline and the Residence) or College Drive, both of which are south of Baseline Road. The Residence is located on the College Campus but can be seen from Navaho Drive. If you enter the campus by College Drive you will need to turn left at any of the intersecting streets and travel across the campus to Navaho Drive.

Please download hi rezolution PDF file of the Parking Map for your conveniece.

If you are staying in the Residence (located between Buildings F and G) go to the entrance of that building (see (i) on the accompanying map). There is a blue sign in front of the Residence which says “Algonquin College Residence and Conference Centre”. There is space in front of the Residence for about six cars to pull off and park at any one time to unload luggage or drop off passengers. The Residence Registration Desk is just inside the ground level front door. The Desk is staffed 24 hours a day. There are usually rolling luggage carriers available to help you get your bags to your room. Obviously, if a large number of people arrive at one time, it may be necessary to wait a few minutes until a luggage carrier is available. When you check in please ask for a parking pass which you will need to place inside your windshield. The Front Desk staff will provide you with instructions to the Residence Parking Lot. The rooms that have been reserved for FAC conference delegates and the Hospitality Suite are in the wing of the Residence indicated by (ii) on the accompanying map. There will be a rack filled with tourist information including bus schedules to your left as you face the Registration Desk. To your right will be the 35th. Street Cafe where you can purchase prepared food or food to prepare in your suite as well as toiletries.

The Conference Registration Desk is located in the Hospitality Suite, indicated on the map by (ii). When you drop by the Conference Registration Desk to pick up your registration/conference bag you will also be able to drop off any silent auction pin dolls and raffle donations not already sent.

Do drop into the Hospitality Suite to pick up a map of the campus and have a cup of tea or coffee and some home baked sweets with other delegates. Hospitality hours will be posted on the door of the Suite.

All workshops will be held in Building P (see (iii) on the accompanying map). P Building is just across a parking lot from the Residence. For delegates with mobility problems transportation will be provided to and from classes.

Thursday’s Opening Reception and Dinner, the Vendors’ Market, Figurative Art Display, and Sunday’s Reception and Banquet will all take place in Building D (see (iv) on the map).

Parking:
Free parking is provided in Parking Lot 11 to all conference delegates who are staying in the Residence.
Parking is free in all lots from 5:00 p.m. Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday.
Pay parking is available on week days in Lot 12 or Visitors Parking Lot.

As the national capital, Ottawa offers a beautiful setting for conferences. Algonquin College is a short bus ride from the downtown where galleries, museums and the Parliament buildings are located. There is lots of doll related shopping in the area with a number of very good quilt, bead and craft shops.

You may want to bring the family - they can sightsee while you take in the conference - or you may want to come a day or two early or stay on a few days following the conference to sightsee. The same room rates apply prior to and following the conference.

Ottawa sits on the banks of the Ottawa River across the river from Gatineau, Quebec. It is particularly beautiful in June. The city has a number of national museums (Nature, Civilization, Science and Technology, War, Contemporary Photography, and Aviation), galleries (the National Gallery and many private ones), and some wonderful shopping.

We hope to see you in Ottawa in June 2011.

Canada's stone Parliament Buildings are adorned with intricate carvings, gargoyles
and friezes. They've been called the "purest example of Gothic Revival architecture"
in the Western Hemisphere.

When the Parliament Buildings were built between 1857 and 1866, they were intended
to house not only Parliament but the entire public service of Canada.

The original Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings burned down in 1916 in the
midst of World War I.

The cause of the fire has never been discovered. Theories of enemy conspiracy
abound, but the most likely cause was a cigarette in the Reading Room.

Parliament has two chambers: the elected House of Commons and the appointed Senate.
By tradition, neither refers to the other chamber by name, but calls it "the other
place".

Normally, members are not called by their own names and are referred to as "the
Honourable Member from...". If the Speaker calls you by name in the House of
Commons, it is because you have broken the rules and risk being disciplined.

The Peace Tower Carillon has 53 bells totalling 53,424 kg (60tons). The biggest bell
weighs 10,080 kg (11tons) and the smallest one weighs 4.5kg (10lbs).
